Hemoglobin is the protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carries carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. In order to function most efficiently, hemoglobin needs to bind to oxygen tightly in the oxygen-rich atmosphere of the lungs and be able to release oxygen rapidly in the relatively oxygen-poor environment of the tissues.
The actual atom that binds oxygen in hemoglobin is a Fe II atom (iron atom in 2+ oxidation state) embedded in the heme moeity of hemoglobin. The rest of the molecule is basically a scaffold that prevents the Fe II from being oxidized to Fe III (that would be bad, because it would no longer want to bind O2). The scaffold also serves to optimize the binding and release of oxygen (by making it sensitive to H+/CO2/2,3 BPG concentrations, etc.)
