Jack storms off, humiliated and crying. He vows to form a new group, and says anyone can join him when he hunts. He disappears into the forest. Everyone is stunned, but the meeting continues. The boys build the fire and the littleuns dance and sing. After the fire, Ralph realizes that all the biguns but Samneric and Piggy have disappeared. Most have gone to join Jack.Elsewhere in the jungle, Jack declares himself chief of the boys who have joined him. As chief, he says he's going to get more "biguns away from the conch." He also says that when his tribe hunts they'll leave some of the kill for the beast. That way, it won't bother them. Jack leads the boys into the forest.
Initially there is only one group of boys but right from the start Jack is a dissenting voice. Eventually Jack leaves and forms his own separate tribe. Near the end of the book all the boys with the exception of Ralph, Piggy and Samneric have joined Jack's tribe. Piggy is then killed, Samneric are captured and forced to join the tribe, leaving Ralph as the only boy who isn't a member of the tribe.

Sam and Eric betray Ralph by joining Jack's tribe and refuse to help him. They warn Ralph that Jack's tribe plans to hunt him, demonstrating their loyalty to the new tribe. Sam and Eric become caught in the middle of the power struggle between Ralph and Jack.

The other biguns are drawn to Jack's tribe because Jack offers them power, freedom from rules, and the opportunity to act on their primal instincts without consequences. Jack's tribe represents a break from the civilization and order imposed by Ralph, allowing the boys to indulge in their savage desires.
