The Aztecs did not get much of a benefit in the begging but they soon adapted to the land and built chinampas, or "floating gardens". They used these to grow crops . They did not have to water these plants because the lake's water always watered the plants. The Aztecs also planted trees to keep the soil from getting carried away. They used canoes or small boats to be able to reach the plants and were able to get a supply of food using this form of agriculture.

Lake Texcoco was important to the Aztecs because it provided a reliable water source for agriculture, enabling them to establish their capital city of Tenochtitlan on an island in the lake. The lake also served as a transportation route for goods and people, connecting the Aztecs to other regions in Mesoamerica. Additionally, the surrounding wetlands offered a diverse ecosystem that supported the Aztec economy through fishing and hunting.
