The hatchling form of this animal is generally designed to consume and store energy for metamorphosis. It can essentially spend the entire growing season eating because it will over winter as a pupa. This increases the chance that the pupa has enough energy to overwinter and reach adulthood. Often nymphs or caterpillars

remain on a single plant for their development and many species are plant specific consumers.

The adult form may or may not have mouth parts. Those individuals that can eat are less restricted in their dietary requirements ex. butterflies can get nectar from many plants where their offspring cannot. Many if not most adults can fly which increases genetic diversity (they are more likely to mate with another of their species with different genetics). Flight also increases the adult's range which improves the chances of finding an appropriate site to lay eggs.
