It is not clear what you mean by 'trap'. It contains chemical energy which can be released by burning, giving 55.5 MJ per kg. You may however be referring to the ability of the substance to absorb heat, i.e. its heat capacity. This is the amount of energy absorbed when the temperature of the substance increases by 1 degree Kelvin. This is 2.087 kJ/kgK at 200 K. (It varies a little with temperature.)

Methane currently is not used as a power source, but methane is flamable and can be used to power things. Scientists are already thinking of ideas on how to use methane to power rocket thrusters. When it burns, there is a net loss of covalent bonds; this releases energy.

Due to methane being so unstable it is best kept in a solid frozen state rather than its natural gas state. Disposal of methane has proven to be somewhat difficult, because it reacts violently with other substances and can not be disposed of in traditional ways.

Hydrogen and free oxygen in the air contain chemical potential energy that is released as heat when chemical bonds are formed between them to form water

Hydrogen and oxygen can be separate out from water, but the process consumes energy. This energy is released when the atoms recombine in a flame later.

Thus free hydrogen is a way of storing energy for later use as a fuel.

A multiple well header system includes an upright header, a plurality of inlet pipes and an outlet pipe. The header has a substantially vertical orientation relative to the ground. The inlet pipes are for interconnection with separate gas wells to allow for passage of methane coal gas and water vapor entrained with the gas there through. Each inlet pipe is mounted to a continuous sidewall of the header through an inlet opening of the header. Each inlet pipe is in communication with an interior chamber of the header. The water vapor enters the interior chamber of the header through the inlet pipes and separates from the gas and falls to and condenses above and within a water collection area of the header. The gas enters the interior chamber of the header through the inlet pipes and rises to an upper end of the header. The inlet pipes are arranged in series vertically and in a plurality of horizontal pairs on the header. The outlet pipe is for interconnection with an external location. The outlet pipe is mounted to the sidewall of the header above the inlet pipes and is in communication with an outlet opening of the header such that gas which has risen within the interior chamber of the header enters the outlet pipe for conductance to the external location.

Why methane is collected by downward displacement?

Methane is not soluble in water and the density is also lower.

What type of gas which can be collected from landfills and burned for energy?

Methane.

What might happen to the methane that's not collected from landfills?

Methane gas is hard to collect and destroy in large quantities. The gas that isn't collected will most likely rise and damage the o-zone layer. (Methane is a main cause of global warming).

What is a waste to energy plant?

You are probably thinking of waste dumps where methane is generated by the decay of organic matter, and where this methane is collected and used to produce electricity. Combustion engines can run directly from the methane coupled to a generator.

What fuel is produce in some landfills?

Bio gas (methane) is produced in landfills through the decay of plant matter. In some landfills methane gas is collected for use as fuel. Otherwise, methane is a significant greenhouse gas.

Why do we use coal?

For heating. !!!! Also it is an industrial chemical, which is baked to form coke, and liberates , ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, methane, sulphur dioxide, which are collected and further used industrially,.

How do you collect a dry sample of methane?

Methane is insoluble in water, and it is less dense than air. Introduce moist methane via a delivery tube from one end of U shaped tube. The u shaped tube should contain fused calcium chloride. Dry methane can then be collected from the other end of the u shaped tube.

How can agriculture help reduce global warming?

Agriculture contributes to global warming in several ways. If these practices were abolished, corrected or improved, then this would reduce global warming. These practices are:Cattle rearing where cattle belch vast amounts of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.Rice paddy farming, where methane is released from the anaerobic dcomposition of rotting vegetation.Pig and other animal farming, where rotting manure is not stored and the methane safely collected.

What is methane ice?

Methane ice is frozen methane. An ice made of methane (CH4) instead of water (H2O). The term methane ice could also refer to methane clathrate, which is an ice composed of both methane and water.
