It takes commitment, determination and the willingness to succeed. It not only takes commitment to train and prepare the body physically for the arduous conditions of the job but also to prepare yourself mentally for the draining and often mind numbing conditions that candidates are put through in their period of training. You need to be prepared to undertake any given task at any time and that is what makes those that succeed from those that fall below the line.... the ability to adapt to any situation and to have the physical and mental capacity to achieve it. It also takes will and a driving force from within to really succeed as a special forces soldier. It is all mind over matter, being able to push your limits beyond what you ever expected. It is the ability to keep moving forward, to perform one more rep, to stay awake after a week with less than 2 hours sleep. When asked to do the impossible, you must be prepared to put in everything that you have and more and get on with the job. Another side which i believe is just as important is the emotional aspect of the situation. Special forces soldiers must be able to drop what their doing at an instant and clear their minds of anything that may be bothering them. They must be somewhat 'emotionless' when it comes to leaving their friends, family and loved ones at short notice to perform often life threatening duties at any destination. I personally believe that special forces soldiers are some of the strongest and most determined men out their. I respect what they do and the commitment that they need to get to where they are. They are an inspiration to me and i hope that in the not too distant future i too will be one of those men, inspiring others out their to never give up and achieve your dreams. By Ben S

There are different ways, but typically a person would need to enlist into the army as any soldier would, complete that enlistment, then re-enlist with an assignment to attend SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection), which, as the name implies, is a 3-week course to verify that you are qualified to attend the actual SF Qualification course.

There are many reasons why Special Forces soldiers (synonymous with Green Berets) are required to have prior military service, the obvious being the enormous responsibility given to them during their duties. Under certain conditions however, some soldiers have been allowed to qualify without prior service.

The qualification course (after one successfully passes SFAS) can last from several months to almost a year, depending on the job field in which the soldier will specialize. Both SFAS and the Qualification course are very rigorous both physically and mentally, and many people who attempt these schools do not graduate. Green Beret's arguably need the equivalent of a master's degree in knowledge to be successful at their mission.

Upon graduation, the soldier will be assigned to a Special Forces unit, such as 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, NC.

The first thing you have to do is do as well as you can in school and graduate. Believe it or not making yourself study and learn also develops your mental toughness and personal discipline. Next keep yourself in good physical shape and last but not least learn to respect other people or other people will never learn to respect you.
