How does religion effect abnormal behavior?

I'll work on the principle that the abnormal behavior was already extant, as to "effect" something can also be used to mean: "to bring into being..."

I recall studies that show that almost universally, religion has a positive effect on bringing about order, both civil and within individuals.

I am referring not, of course; to war.

Apart from Anarchy and possibly satanism/witchcraft, almost all religions are systems and/or faiths which attempt to instill in the individual the highest moral values and principles which make for peaceful living with one's neighbor.

Of religions power to "cure" abnormal behavior, there are many that claim to do so, some with more success, others with less.

It would be wrong to cite one religion over another. It is for the person concerned to investigate the veracity of the claims themselves.

It should be noted, however; that religions employ the use of a Deity, and thus; supernatural power to alter behavior may be bestowed upon the believer by this means. Not as though religions are slow to incorporate behavioral modification based upon logic, reason, argument and guidance; even as other schools of thought and philosophies do...

It needs to mentioned as well, that there are some people, to whom exposure to a particular belief system, or else still yet, a particular group/leader/s will have a derogatory effect. This could be through a variety of reasons. The fault may lie with the belief system. Or the interpretation of it. Or the people advocating it. Still yet, the person in receipt of these "truths" may either be wholly unsuited for that belief system, or (as with drugs) someone who, upon sampling so much of something; goes on to attempt a more radical/orthodox or divergent form of the same.

There is a difference also in whether a person chose to look into the things of the faith they follow, or whether they were born into it or had it thrust upon them.

I was told of a mitigating consideration which is given in law courts for the children of teachers, ministers and policeman because being raised in so strict an environment can sometimes stifle the ordinary process whereby adolescents often rebel and then "settle down" as they mature. Nevertheless, there is a passage in the Old Testament where God says; To whom shall I teach wisdom ?
