Tastes great, and the horehound is an herbal remedy for whooping cough. we also serve it as a base for a Manhattan recipe which is quite good too.

There are many versions of this recipe as there are for a Hot Toddy, also suggested to help a cold. Drinking alcohol is a main active ingredient in most cough syrup medicines for colds. It helps you relax and rest better and can help clear secretions of a cold from your throat. The main ingredients in Rock and Rye preparations are rye whiskey, citrus (lemon slices, lemon peel, lemon juice, lime juice, etc.) and rock candy sugar.My favorite version is based on the following recipe, although I change the spices and flavors from time to time as well as the alcohol to bourbon, brandy, rum, etc. according to my whimsey. This makes 1 liter (you can also make it in one dose drinks, see other recipes below):1 liter rye whiskey 8 oz. rock candy4 oz cherry syrup (or the liquid from a jar of maraschino cherries)12 whole cloves3 whole star anise (available at Asian markets if not at the local groceries)3 sticks cinnamon1 orange, thinly sliced1 lemon, thinly slicedStir ingredients together in a 4-qt. glass jar with a lid.
