They are facultative anaerobes which means that while like people they can use oxygen as their source for electrons in reduction reactions during metabolism, they can also get energy without oxygen through fermentation. Salmonella primarily uses phospholipids as their energy source. Their most common way of getting them is by taking it from their host's bile through protein channels on their membranes.
