SMS messaging stands for Short Message Service. It is the application used to send messages in type format from mobile phone to mobile phone. It is also used on laptops and PC’s to send instant messages to other users. This is the advanced technology breaking away from the days when people carried pagers with just numbers available to use to send messages. Users began sending written messages in number code, using the phone keypad letters and a prayer that the receiver would figure out the message quickly. Yet with three or four letters possible for each number, it took a while to guess what the sender was trying to say. The computer uses a “gateway” to send messages from the internet user to service centers or hubs that are used only for messaging. The hub then locates the person the message is for, and transfers it to their mobile device, cell phone, laptop, PC, or otherwise. The gateway, or hub, takes in information from PC’s and internet connections, then translates or adapts it into a readable format on a mobile network or cell phone. The most commonly used PC program for SMS messaging is Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service. Within the standard Outlook programming, there is an option to add a plug-in that allows you to basically email messages to a cell phone. For MAC users, there are several options to download software, free and paid, that will allow SMS messaging on the computer. One in particular is available with any browser, and it is called Message Planet, Inc. Always be sure you know what you are installing, though, before you click anything. Research the company, and be sure the web address is entered directly into your address bar, rather than clicking through to it. Also be sure all anti-virus software is running and up-to-date to catch any links or additions that you aren’t expecting and could harm your computer.

I believe that a text is sent by using satellite technology. The satellite detects when the phone wants to send a text and beams it to the desired phone. Various makes of cell phones and text messagers have differing instructions for creating and sending text messages. In a general and simplified explanation, by using the number dialing keys which have the letters of the alphabet displayed divided among the keys, you press a key down repeatedly until the letter (or number or symbol) that you want to use in your message displays on the screen. For example, the number 2 key also displays 'abc', in most situations where you have initiated the "create text message" mode using the instructions with your phone, if you push that number 2 button one time your screen will display an A. If you push it twice, it displays the B. Pushing down the number 2 button three times will present a C, and if you push it four times the number 2 will be the selected character to go into the message text. By using the keys in this way (or a similar way according to your specific cell phone's manual), you can "type" messages using letters, words, numbers and symbols. There are many short cuts, abbreviations, and slang terms, that have been being developed as this process is popularized. These help reduce the number of times buttons need to be pushed to say the same thing. Some phones have built-in features that will auto fill some text for you for common phrases, etc. Once you have typed your message, you can dial in the phone number to send it to and it sends it from your phone to the one you designated. The technology from phone to cell to phone is still digital cell phone technology. When in the texting mode, the phones have been engineered to know how to convert what is sent or received into displayed text instead of sound/voice. When a text message comes in to your phone, it will indicate, by a ring or tone or the notification method you have set up, that there is a message waiting to be read. Your phone's instruction manual will give directions for accessing that text message.
