The backing plate on a lathe is used to mount the chuck to it and is the adapter to the lathe spindle.
On drum brakes the backing plate is what all the brake parts are mounted on. The springs, shoes, and wheel cylinder are all mooted to a stationary backing plate. On disc brakes the friction material or pad is glued or riveted to the baking plate.
You can find a backing plate for your 1998 Honda Accord passenger side mirror at most auto-parts stores. You can also find the backing plate at your local Honda dealership.

I am about ready to this on my 2004 Escalade. I am purchasing Split backing plate so I shouldn't have to pull the rear axle. I will loosen the 4 bolts that hold the axle and the backing plate in place. Once loose enough, I will cut out the old backing plate, shouldn't be too hard as they are already rotted substantially. I will be doing this in the next few days. Dan
You may very likely have bent the thin metal backing plate behind the brake rotor. That will cause the backing plate to rub against the rotor and make an awful grinding noise. Its not too hard to reform the backing plate away from the rotor.
you dont without cutting the plate

The only thing that you need to check is the length of the rear end from backing plate to backing plate. Also measure the pads that are welded to the rear end where the springs sit against the rear end housing / difference from backing plate to the side of the pads. Then compare those measurements with the factory rear end are the one that you are replacing.
