For that year, it should be the 5R55E.

If you open the drivers door there should be an information sticker on the latch pillar Under " TR "or " TRANS " , I believe code " D " is the 5R55E and code " T " is the 4R55E
5r55e
I believe that is the 5R55E
In my 1999 Explorer it was inside the tranny (5R55E)
It is possible, but not easy. Both transmissions bolt right up to the 4.0L Cologne 60 degree V-6, and are virtually identical in size. The A4LD is a hydraulically-controlled transmission (mostly), and the 5R55E is fully electronic. So you need to get the controls for the 5R55E in there somehow. Some have swapped computers from the 5R55E truck, but there are some sensors in the rest of the truck that are different, so you will get some PCM errors. Some have created hybrid harnesses, and used both computers to control things. There are also aftermarket controllers ($$$). Google and read the Ranger and Explorer forums.
If you have a 95-96 Explorer, you have the 4R tranny. 97-01 will be the 5R.
4R55E-4 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANS. 5R55E-5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANS. The difference is in the shift strategy that results in 5 speeds, most of the internal components are the same for both gearboxes. Valve bodies are different. Both are electronic, and both were installed primarily behind 4.0 liter 6-cyl engines, 5r55e is an improvement over the 4r44e which in turn owes its legacy to the c3/ a4ld of yesteryear.
Yes it will fit correctly.
