The URL (uniform resource locator) entered into the bar references a location on the internet, accessible via one or more network connections between computers and servers. The host is identified by a DNS (Domain Name System) listing, usually hosted remotely, and provides an IP address to which the server is attributed. The internet browser (to which the address bar belongs) then requests the specific webpage specified in the URL, and the IP either serves it, provides an error message, or does not respond (resulting in a browser-provided error message).
