How does the bible teach christians to live in a different way?

The "different way" that you mention is in reality "the way God wants people to live in this world". The Bible tells us what God expects from each of us in the form of Commandments such as; "And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." This is the first commandment. "And the second, like it is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." There is no other commandment greater than these (Mark 12:30-31).
The bible also tells what things are sin and how to avoid them. Other places in the bible gives us practical instructions on how to live right and how to please God.
The bible is full of instructions but would do us no good if we did not belong to God through Jesus Christ His Son and with great help from the Holy Spirit that indwells us. We are indeed different as we are the children of the one true God.
