Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 US 335 (1963)
Gideon v. Wainright is the case that gives the right to counsel meaning. If someone is unaware that he has such a right, then the right is meaningless. There are many issues in whether it helps or hinders law enforcement in terms of if it becomes harder to prosecute someone that has an attorney. In some instances it may hinder because some evidence may not be obtained absent an attorney. In other instances it may help, because through an accused's attorney there is someone for the prosecution to talk to and negotiate with to achieve a desired outcome. It can cut both ways in terms of getting to justice. It was a precursor that led to the establishment of the Miranda warnings.
