The shrew approached the trap, and it quickly poked the trap several times with its snout in sort of a jabbing fashion as if the shrew was investigating the trap. When the trap was sitting by itself on a smooth linoleum floor, the trap tended to get pushed away, and the trap frequently tripped without catching the shrew. After that, I put something heavy behind the trap (a can of paint in my case), and my success rate was much much higher.
