If you visited an unfamiliar country you would quickly learn the cultural differences and adapt many of them to be accepted. Adaption occurs at the level of the synapse. It can be in the form of 1. Hebian synapse (Pavlovian Conditioning) which permanently alters the neuron (in a simplified explanation) form new connections. Or it can be in the form of non-hebian synapse (Alpha conditioning) which is basically sensitization, so turning the volume up or down on the release of neurotransmitters until the stimulus is removed then the neurons revert back to normal. Although adults can no longer make new neuron cells, the brain is constantly changing. The neurons already present still develop and make new connections all the time.
