Viscosity means how runny it is. Thus a lava with low viscosity will erupt fast and form long, wide spreading lava flows (eg Hawaii) and lavas of high viscosity will erupt slowly and form lava domes (eg Mt. St. Helens).

lower viscosity= faster flow rate

higher viscosity=slower flow rate

How does heat affect lava flow?

Heat effects the flow rate of lava because the hotter the lava is, the less viscous it is which allows it to flow faster than if it had a slow flow rate. If it has a low temperature, then the flow rate will be much slower because it has a high viscosity.

What affects the speed of lava flows?

The temperature and the silica content will both affect the viscosity of lave which will in turn affect the flow rate (whereby the lower the temperature and the higher the silica content, the higher the viscosity and the lower the flow rate).

How thick is the lava from a cinder volcano?

The thickness of lava is generally dependent on the eruption rate of the volcano. The flow rate of lava is measured by the lava's viscosity. Highly viscous lava does not flow well or travel great distances. Low viscosity lava can flow for great distances.

Lava that is low in silica tends to?

Lava that is low in silica tends to have lighter rocks come out of it.

How can stop lava?

Different methods have been used including: breaching the sides of a lava tube or channel, diverting the flow, constructing barriers, and bombing the lava flow. Another way to stop a lava flow is to increase the lava flow's viscosity by spraying it with water, increasing the rate at which gas escapes from the flow, stirring the flow, or seeding the flow with foreign nuclei .In Italy, engineers have installed retaining walls to try and slow down lava flows coming down the side of Mount Etna, on the island of Sicily. These walls did slow down the lava flows enough that they didn't reach inhabited land. In Hawaii, engineers bombed narrow lava tubes, forcing the lava to lose energy. And in Iceland, firefighters sprayed water on lava flows for nearly 5 months, cooling it so that it solidified early and didn't block an important port.

How is viscosity related to flow rate?

Viscosity is a substances resistance to flow. So as the viscosity of a substance increases, the flow rate will decrease.

How does viscosity relate to flow rate?

High viscosity lead to a low flow rate and inverse.

How does temperature affect how well magma will flow?

It affects the rate of flow of the lava. Hotter means faster flow

How are viscosity and flow rate related?

viscosity is inversely proportional to the flow rate. the actual formula is complex , but higher the viscosity slower will be the flow rate. honey flows slowly and air flows freely because of the above reason.viscosity is also essential, otherwise we would have never been able to use an ink pen.viscosity makes the ink to flow on paper

What is The rate at which liquids flow is called?

Viscosity is the term.

What does the viscosity of a fluid tell you about it flow rate?

it tells you, the higher the viscosity and the thicker the substance is the lower the flow rate hope this helped!:) :) peace

Relationship between flow time and viscosity?

The higher the viscosity, the lower the flow rate.

Why do some liquids flow more slowly than others?

The viscosity of the fluid controls its flow rate. A higher viscosity reduces the flow.

What is vescocity?

Rate of flow any liquids is called viscosity... Viscosity depends on the density...
