The main purpose of ultrafiltration is not for exchange of oxygen or nutrients or even the removal of waste products. These are of negligable importance. The primary purpose of ultrafiltration is really for the maintainance of the plasma and intersitial fluid volumes.

What is the difference between filtration and ultrafiltration?

Filtration is done by a filter paper, while ultrafiltration is done by a semipermeable membrane. Solute particles that are 1-200nm in diameter can pass through filter paper, but cannot penetrate the semipermeable membrane. Only particles with a diameter less than 1nm can pass through the semipermeable membrane.

What is ultrafiltration for renal dialysis?

It is the removal of solvents containing solutes across a semipermeable membrane within the filter/dialyser during haemodialysis that is achieved through the programmed pressure (Transmembrane Pressure or TMP)which is artifically exerted by a combination of two forces 1) the positive hydrostatic pressure (or pump speed) and the negative dialysate pressure brought about by a pump within the circuit. The net movement and removal of fluid/solvents is Ultrafiltration.
