Weightlifting is a form of exercise that causes a number of notable adaptations of the body. The extent of these adaptations is dependant on the frequency of sessions, and the amount and character of work done in each session. These adaptations include increased bone density, hypertrophy of muscle including the heart muscle, enhanced innervation of muscle fibre, and storage of metabolites in the muscle tissue.

However, as a long-time devotee of the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, I can say with some assurety that there are some interesting aspects of Weightlifting that the average person would not know.

Firstly, that if a person were to engage in a very productive training session of one hour's duration, it would be likely that only 10 minutes of that hour would be actual exercise. The remaining 50mins would be resting. For this reason, Weightlifting would not be a good activity if you are looking to increase metabolism to lose weight. Far better to try some continuous forms of exercise such as swimming, cycling (stationery cycle) or treadmill running, or simply get involved in some active sport. You would lose weight faster.

Secondly, to gain the benefit out of Weightlifting exercises, you need the coaching of an experienced and well credentialed coach/trainer. Left to their own devices, people engage in weightlifting badly. They concentrate on wrong exercises (e.g. bench press) and would be prone to reducing flexibility and injury.

However, when coached by a well credentialed weightlifting coach, engagement in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting is an excellent form of exercise. Its all about learning the difficult skills involved, keeping weights light when you are a beginner, improving your flexibility, speed, coordination, balance and confidence.

Under a good coach you will walk away from a weightlifting session with a feeling of achievement and you will expend a great deal of energy. A good coach will not endanger you and will reduce greatly the possibility of injury. Moreover it is fun.

Without a good coach, that is somebody with real knowledge of Weightlifting and not the average personal trainer, you will find it really hard.

Cardio and Weight Training Exercise Programs for Weight Loss?

Exercise programs for weight loss will consist of two parts. The first part is cardio training. Cardio training pumps the blood through the body faster, elevating the heartbeat. This in turn temporarily raises the metabolism which burns fat. Cardio is a short term solution to losing weight as quickly as possible. The metabolism returns to its normal state when the heart rate returns to normal. The second part of exercise programs for weight loss is weight resistance training. Weight resistance training builds the muscle groups which in turn tightens the body up. Muscles form a much higher, yet natural metabolism boost. The metabolism levels remain long-term. As long as the workout is continued, the metabolism levels will remain steady 24-hours a day, seven days a week. If muscle loss occurs, the metabolism will return to its former state, resulting in weight gain.
