The Protection of Vulnerable Adults scheme was introduced by the Care Standards Act 2000. It aims to ensure that no one is allowed to work in the care sector if they have ever abused, neglected or otherwise harmed vulnerable adults in their care or placed them at risk.

Within a company or organisation, it is usually standard practice to have:A lead safeguarding officer (aka 'Senior designated Professional' or 'Child/Adult protection officer')Deputy Officer(s) for safeguarding (aka 'alternate')Should a worker or volunteer within the organisation see or hear something that concerns them, they would record their concerns and inform the lead (or the deputy if the lead is unavailable or implicated).The lead/deputy will then ensure the concern is reported to the appropriate authority (such a the Police, IWF or Social Care Services, etc.) and should then operate as a liaison with that authority as the case is investigated.
