Fairly easy though they are very dirty if you are thinking of one as a pet. They grow very fast and can get pretty good sized take up a lot of room. And I know that it is illegal to own them as pets in the state where they are native in the wild so be sure that they are even legal as pets in your area.

If you get them while they are still very small its kinda hard, but once they grow a little larger its actually quite easy to tell. Males have longer tails and longer front claws, while females are all-around larger. I have a male and a female myself, it was hard to tell at first but now that they are a comple of months old I can see that one is bigger than the other. If you only have one, the best bet is to look up on the internet "red eared slider gender", you will see various pictures of how long claws and tails are for females and males relative to the rest of their body. If you still cant figure it out, I suggest just taking it to the vet.
