WW1 ended with the signing of an Armistice [a truce or a cessation of hostilities] on 11.11.1918. It was not unconditional surrender by Germany, the reason why there were those who said WW2 started on the same day because the allies had not pressed for unconditional surrender. In fact after the treaty of Versailles the french leader Georges Clemenceau said " we will have to do it all over again in 20 yrs time"
