It requires a scanner to properly diagnosis a check engine light.
Replace your thermostat had same problem it sets a code but no check engine light
well, check your oil, engine coolant, and your radiator.
It's in the airbox at the front corner of the engine compartment (I can't remember which side). Check your owner's manual, it'll tell you where to find it and how to change it.
I know the 3.4L is 5w30, but I can't remember exactly when they switched the recommendation for the 3.8 from 10w30 to 5w30. Double check the oil cap and it will be on there if you have a 3.8L engine.

Check engine is an error. You have to go at a garage to see what is the error code, then correct the problem.
The check engine light will illuminate.

It means the engine didn't warm up to the correct operating temperature. Thermostat is probably stuck open. Replace the thermostat.
