A society is defined as an organized group(s) of interdependent people, generally sharing a common territory, language and culture and who act together for collective survival and well-being. Interdependent peoples are such that they rely on people within that particular society to attain their subsistence. A family is considered to range from one parent to two, to multiple generations of parents and their offspring. Families do not always share the same household, and do not always support one another. However, for sake of argument I'm going to assume that you meant people who occupy the same household. While a given society, coupled with their culture, can meet the complex needs of the individual(Such as Law and Order for people), the household that a person resides in must meet a person's basic survival needs(subsistence, social relation and shelter).

Family is the basic unit of social interaction because life starts from family. The family, divided into separate jobs for each unit, in the end is what meets the basic needs of the human to ensure survival, while a society is a social network of peoples who support this goal.

The family is considered to be the cornerstone in society because the family is the 1st people that interact through socialisation with the children. If the family does a good job in raising children then the children grows up to be valuable citizens i.e they would pay taxes, vote, help the less fortunate etc.

In a general sense I believe that's true. The family is the fountain of life. It creates and trains new citizens. Without strong families a civilization has no hope.
