If you mean the death of Mellish, the blade went in to the handle. This was intended to add more realism to the scene, since a soldier seeks to kill, not wound.

bullets do not go far after being fired into water.............and are unlikely to penetrate a body after couple of feet into water....Most bullets will shatter after going a few inches into the water, however, if they are already slowed down enough, they could go through the water and kill someone.
A dull knife rips the skin, while a sharp knife (think scalpel) slices smoothly. A dull knife would be by far more painful.

As far as I know, painters don't use knives. What I think you could be asking is a putty knife used by drywallers.
