Based on the speed of sound being 340 m/s and that of light being 299,792,458 m/s. we get the speed of light being ~881,742 times that of sound. So if sound goes 1cm then light will travel 881,742 cm or 8,817.42 m.

Can compression waves be transmitted through a vacuum of space?

no the only waves that can go through space is the electromagnetic waves and it doesnt need sound or matter to travel.compressional waves have to come off of something and travel{like sound} it cant travel because there is nothing to travel through.the vacuum of space is just nothing and only light can go through as well, but it takes time.

Sound requires time to travel?

Yes, it requires time.

Why does light travel slowest through solids while sound travels fastest through solids?

The simplest explanation would be that light reflects/refracts as it passes through objects, which takes time/slows the light down, while sound is passed through its required medium (i.e. no sound in space, I know, space battles aren't going to be nearly as awesome without sound) the sound propagates by bumping each atom of its medium against the next atom in the medium. The closer the mediums atoms are packed together, the faster the sound can hit the next atom and send the signal.

Why do sound waves travel slower than other electromagnetic waves?

Light is a series of particles that move in a tight wave, each particle generally following a straight line through air or a vacuum. Sound emanates from the source as a circular larger-frequency wave that moves air in it's path (like the wave of a pebble dropped in water). Sound is affected by the air it moves through and the size of the wave is increased the further it travels (over time/distance the sound gets lower). light is faster than sound becuase... sound takes longer to reach it's detination.

Is a light-year the amount of time that it takes for light to travel from the sun to Earth?

No. A light year is the distance that any light can travel in a year. It's about 63 thousand times the distance from the sun to Earth. The light from the sun takes about 8 minutes to travel to the Earth.

How can light and sound travel at a same time in televisions?

They don't really travel at the same speed, but, on television, the distance they travel is so short, that the difference between the speed of sound and the speed of light is almost non-existant.

Does light travel to the ground faster than sound does?

Yes. Light travels approximately 186,000 miles every second, while sound waves travel only about 1,120 feet in a second. Light wins the race every time!
