Apparently it depends on how big a dick your local traffic cop is! I have received two tickets with different distances statedm one said at least 5 feet away, and the second one said I needed to be 8 feet away, and the FAQ on NYC.org says 12 feet away. So when you are parking near fire hydrants in NYC your best bet is to expect a ticket, because that is what you will get.
