New York and New Jersey are right next to each other. They are separated by the Hudson River, which flows down the northeast side of New Jersey, and the west side of Manhattan.
There are a few ways to get into Manhattan from New Jersey. You can take the:
George Washington Bridge (which traverses the Hudson River at Fort Lee, New Jersey, and Upper Manhattan, at West 181st Street)
Lincoln Tunnel (which traverses the Hudson River at Weehawken, New Jersey and West 40th Street, Manhattan)
Holland Tunnel (which traverses the Hudson River at Newport, New Jersey and the West Village, Manhattan)
Or you can take a detour through Staten Island and Brooklyn:
1) take the Bayonne Bridge from Bayonne, NJ, into Staten Island. The road from the Bayonne Bridge is called the Dr. Martin Luther King Expressway.
2) Follow the MLK Expressway until it intersects with the Staten Island Expressway.
3) Make a LEFT onto the Staten Island Expressway.
4) Drive on the Staten Island Expressway until you get to the Verrazano Bridge, then cross the Verrazano Bridge into south Brooklyn.
5) the road from the Verrazano Bridge into Brooklyn is called the Gowanas Expressway. Drive north on the Gowanas Expressway until you hit the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.
6) the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel will take you into Lower Manhattan.
There is one more option. You can take the Tappan Zee Bridge into Westchester, NY, and then drive south through Westchester into Manhattan:
1) Take the Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway through Nyack, NJ, across the Tappan Zee Bridge. When you cross the bridge into Westchester, you will be on the New York Thruway.
2) Drive south on the New York Thruway until you get to where it intersects with the Cross County Parkway. You will know if you've missed the turn because after its intersection with the Cross County Parkway, the New York Thruway becomes the Major Deegan Expressway.
3) Turn RIGHT onto the Cross County Parkway. After a couple of miles, the road will diverge, and you can turn right onto the Saw Mill River Parkway, or left onto the Henry Hudson Parkway (aka the West Side Drive).
4) Turn LEFT onto the Henry Hudson Parkway/West Side Drive. It will take you down the West Side of Manhattan, all the way to the Battery (the lower tip of Manhattan). There are several places where you can turn left, get off the Henry Hudson, and go into Manhattan. You can get off the Henry Hudson at 155th Street, 125th Street, 96th Street, 72nd Street, etc.
All of this information is available on Google Maps.
