it depends on which beach you are traveling to... if you are going to st. george island, then it would be about 2 hours or so to get there. It most definitely does not feel like a long trip to get there from Tallahassee since i have traveled from Tallahassee to there my self a couple of times... you can take the scenic route which would be going through the apalachicola national forest where you can see all kinds of wildlife! if you go this way, through the woods, time will fly by.....

There are beaches in Tampa. There is Picnic Island in south Tampa. It is down near MacDill Air Force Base. They have canoe trails, a fishing pier, two playgrounds, restrooms, grills, picnic tables, and gazebos. If you are in town during the early parts of May, you can watch the Blue Angels practicing for the annual airshow from the south point of the beach.

If you are in the military, there is a beach for the GI's along with their friends and family on the south side of MacDill Air Force Base. Due to restricted security, you must go through the military police at the Dale Mabry Hw. gates with a someone that has a valid military ID.

There is also Cypress Point. It is located near West Shore and International malls. There are gazebos, a small boardwalk, and some picnic tables. Several years ago the area was heavily wooded. It required pick up trucks and Jeeps to get back to the beach, but they have been doing a good deal of work and have cleared the area. The restroom facilities have not been put in as of yet, but there are Port-a-lets.

Both of these beaches are nearby the Gandy Bridge. Gandy will take you over to Pinellas county. Pinellas is home to some of the larger and more populated beaches such as St. Petersburg. It is about a 20 minute drive over the bridge.

Depends, If you take FL-20 West it is just about 110 miles. I used to live in Tallahassee and my girlfriend went to FSUPC,

so I would make trips there on any weekend I could get off work. (I worked at a local pet shop on Pensacola St).

Although this way is the shortest distance wise, it is only two lanes and you will have to pass through some smaller towns where the speed limit is lower. If you decide to take I-10 to 231 it is four lane almost the whole way, and you can go 70 for most of it because it is pretty rural. Hope this helps you out! Sorry for being so elaborate, haha

There is commonly some confusion of Tampa terms. Understanding this will help you understand the answer a bit better.

Tampa is the name of the city, not Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay is an actual bay. It is a body of water off of the Gulf of Mexico. It is very large, and several counties have a coastline on Tampa Bay. The Tampa Bay is 350 miles wide and 450 miles long. It is a harbor, so there is a lot of shoreline around it. This means there are many beaches directly on the Tampa Bay, including many series of small islands. However, many of them have heavy development or housing. There is no public access to a good deal of the beach areas.

Tampa Bay Area is a collection of cities that have a shoreline on the bay, but not all of them are actually Tampa, or even in the same county as Tampa. This can be confusing because some organizations, like the Tampa Bay Rays, aren't actually in Tampa. The Rays for instance are in St. Petersburg.

If you are traveling and looking for a hotel on or near the beach, make sure it actually is at the beach. Many places will advertise that they are "Tampa Bay Area," but that does not always mean they are a decent distance to the bay or any beaches. It just means they are in the general area of cities somewhere near the bay. Most hotels that are anywhere near the beach will advertise the actual distance.
