There is an observation deck in the crown of the statue, however since 9/11 no access inside the statue has been permitted. Currently, the pedestal at the base of the monument is as high as you can go.

There is a strong movement underway to reopen it, but there has also been resistance from the National Park Service for safety reasons. There is no alternate exit from the interior, meaning even a small trash can fire at the bottom could be deadly for those above.

The interior was never really designed for tourists, and was originally meant only as maintenance access.

I think you can go into the crown. I am not sure, but that is what my friend tells me.
