"Standing still" IS a measurement relative to the Earth. Relative toother things, you are moving with high speeds in complicated paths.But relative to the Earth, you are standing still.
The Sun appears to move relative to the background stars because it is the Earth that is actually moving in its orbit around the Sun.While it is true that the Sun is moving, making its own orbit around the center of the Milky Way galaxy, this motion is too small to be seen within any human lifetime. For our purposes, the Sun is essentially standing still, while the Earth is racing around the Sun at 67,000 miles per hour.

This is a good question, one that I myself have pondered upon in the past. The spin of the Earth does not only affect solids objects. The atmosphere is also spinning at the same rate as the Earth. From this it follows that when we are flying in an airplane, we are moving forward relative to what's around us: the Earth and its atmosphere. This is the same reason why we're not perpetually flying sideways when attempting to stand still: inertia.
Its all relative to your point of reference... The earth rotates from west to east about its axis, or counter-clockwise looking down from a point in space above the north pole. You are standing on the earth, so you are also moving from west to east. You look up at the sun or stars, and they appear to move from east to west. Do this experiment... Stand still and look at some object in front of you. Pretend you are the earth and your head is the north pole. Turn slowly to your left (west to east) and you will notice that the object seems to move to your right (east to west).

Relative motion is the concept that the motion of all objects is relative to other objects. If you are sitting still right now you are not moving relative to the earth, however you are moving relative to sun.

Speed is always the speed relative to something else.If you see something standing still, that just means that it's movingwith exactly the same speed and direction that you are. Everything is always moving. Even when you think you're standing still, you're actually speeding through space. Your moving relative to the sun and stars- though you are at rest relative to the earth. Right now your speed relative to the sun is about 100,000 kilmeters per hour. Yes. Every star has a "proper motion", which is their motion relative to the solar system. Some stars are moving toward us, while others are moving away. Nothing is standing still. Of course, the Earth is moving around the Sun, and the Sun is orbiting the center of the galaxy, and the Milky Way galaxy itself is moving - but we can't know where. Every other galaxy is moving too, and there isn't a way to identify where the Big Bang started.
By comparing the object with a stationary object. For instance, we are standing apparently still on earth, yet by comparing our position against the sun and stars, we have proof that the earth is actually moving.
