it depends on the breed. Greyhounds have been clocked at 45 miles per hour, but other breeds of sighthounds such as Azawakhs and Salukis, have been clocked running faster than that for a short time. But if you compare that to a pekingese that is incredibly slow, you can't just make a general statement of how fast dogs are. (the akc describes a pekingese's gait as "unhurried" meaning slow.)
