It means you scored higher than 42% of your peers and 58% scored higher than you. In other word's it's a little below average. If you still can pick up a couple ASVAB study guides and take the test at a later date. A higher score will give you more options.

Yes a 97 is an amazing score! I scored a 93 AFQT ( basically fancy language for your overall score). And I have been told by numerous recruiters I have pick of jobs. So you do too

Becoming an E4 is not based on your ASVAB score. If you are talking about enlisting as an E4, you must have a Bachelor's degree. You can also become an E4 by enlisting and doing a good job and putting your time in.
