It's a challenge for most native English speakers.

Most people will jump to tell you that the hardest thing to learn is the Cyrillic alphabet (the alphabet the Russian language uses.) Honestly, as a Russian Major in college, I can tell you that it took 1 week to learn the alphabet, and out of everything, that has been the easiest thing to learn.

The hardest thing for me is cases. Russian is a case language, which means that nouns and adjectives have different suffixes depending on what they are in the sentence, and what gender of a noun they are. In the following sentences, "big newspaper" is always in the same. In Russian, "big newspaper" would change in each sentence.

"It is in this big newspaper." "Ohn v bolshoi gazete."

"He reads the big newspaper." "Ohn chitaet bolshuyoo gazetu."

I have shown 2 cases; accusative and prepositional. There are 6.

In addition, Russian has strange verbs. Each verb has two words that you use for perfective and imperfective actions. That's also insanely confusing.

So, when someone tells you "Oh yeah, the hardest part is the alphabet." Not true.

Russian can be challenging to learn, especially for English speakers due to its different alphabet and grammar structure. However, with dedication and practice, it is certainly possible to become proficient in the language. Immersion programs and practice with native speakers can also help accelerate the learning process.
