On a car it is very simple. You can only connect to the low pressure side of the system because the connections are different size on the high side. Cars older than mid 90's will need an adapter but again, the low and high are different size and the high side is usually harder to get to. Two cans of 134a will do most cars but some may need another half can to a full one. The fill hose is $8 to $15 dollars and the cans of coolant are $10 to $12.
House AC uses R22 freon and you need a license to buy it and it has to be at a certain amount to work.
