There are organized political groups that call themselves Christian who have opposed civil rights for women and homosexuals. They have also opposed social programs for the poor, and had a ready ear with certain administrations. The poverty rate has increased in the U.S. as a result.

A huge tragedy is the opposition to comprehensive sex education by mainly Christian groups. This has resulted in an increase in unwanted pregnancies and abortions in the past few years.

Some Christian groups support the disastrous U.S foreign policy and military buildup as part of God's plan for Jesus' Second Coming. This has not made the world respect the U.S. as political reforms are happening all over the world and the U.S. has been slow on this.

To be fair, not all Christians support the above policies. There are many Christians with a social justice orientation who do lobby on behalf of the poor and oppressed. Not all Christians oppose the oppression of women. But a few highly organized groups who represent the minority in the U.S. have had disproportionate influence.
