How has Darnay's imprisonment been good?

Darnay was imprisoned primarily on the evidence of a letter written by his father-in-law, Manette, while Manette was himself imprisoned years before. It indicted Darnay as a member of the cruel and aristocratice Evremonds. The court, eager to condemn and execute Darnay, will not listen to Darnay's defense team who argue, then plead, for his life. Not much of that could be considered good. The night before his execution, Darnay is visited in the Bastille by Sidney Carton, who is in love with Darney's wife. After much resistance, Carton compels Darney to change clothes and identities with him; Darney goes free and Carton is executed in his place. There is deep and profound good in that action, indeed, in the entire character of the love Carton has for Lucie Darnay.
