한류 Hallyu refers to the spread of Korean pop culture that began in the late 1990s. The phrase, "韓流," was coined by Beijing journalists who were surprised at the popularity level of Korean cultural exports. The phrase literally means "the flow of Korea" or the "Korean flow."
