Immediately following the UN General Assembly vote in November 1947 in favor

of partitioning the mandate and designating half of it to be administered by Jews,

all of the nations bordering the Jewish sector, plus a few others, united in a military

attack on that section. The fighting continued until after the independent nation of

Israel was declared in May 1948, and much of the Jewish sector was conquered and

absorbed into the Arab sector.

Since then, Israel has been attacked by massed forces from its neighbors on two

significant occasions ... in 1967 and 1973 ... and sporadically by smaller groups

operating within from the territory of its neighbors, such as Hezbolah from Lebanon

and Hamas from Gaza.

Two of Israel's neighbors ... Egypt and Jordan ... have granted it formal peace treaties.

Following the signing of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, Egyptian president

Anwar el Sadat was assassinated by elements in his country protesting his moderation.

Others of Israel's neighbors maintain a formal state of war with Israel to this day.

A few of Israel's neighbors bar entry into their countries by tourists whose passports

contain evidence of their having visited Israel in the past.

And now, there are certain to be other contributors dropping by to enlarge on this

answer. They will chronicle the evils perpetrated by the government and people of

Israel, establishing beyond the shadow of a doubt that Israel and her people deserve

everything to which they have been subjected, and more.

To all of these well-meaning contributors, I pass on the morsel of advice received

more than 30 years ago from my attorney, as I entered the court-room to which

I had been summoned in order to deliver testimony and be cross-examined. He said

"When he asks you what time it is, don't start telling him how to build a clock."

In other words, when you answer a question, answer the question that was asked,

and then stop, no matter how badly you want to answer another question that

wasn't asked.

That's what I have tried to do in my answer above, and I commend that approach

to other passers-by. Debate my facts if they're wrong, but don't tell us "they had it

coming to them". And don't delete my answer because you don't like it. Much like

Israel, my contribution has the right to exist in this space.
