At the beginning of the 20th century Mexico was a raw materials provider, mostly of minerals and oil. It was overwhelmingly agricultural, and the internal economy was quite undeveloped, due to a small population (13.6 million) and lack of any means of capitalization.

By the beginning of the 21st century, Mexico has become an emerging market with large manufacturing and services sectors; it still has many issues such as poverty and undeveloped agriculture, but it is the 11th largest economy in the world, in part due to a large population base (113 million) and an export-oriented economy.
