Cummings was a classicist, and much of his work reflects ancient Greek, for example his jamming words together to mimic the overstuffed compound words of that language. Today, however, only the most old-fashioned, marginal and unpublished writer has anything to do with the arts and sciences of prosody, which is the Greek term for the formal combination of words according to sound and sense that we understand as poetry.
