Louis Riel's father. a well-respected leader in the Métis community, was also named Louis Riel.
A couple of statues have been made, one of which is on the grounds of the Manitoba provincial legislature. The province of Ontario has set aside a day to honour Riel, as have a number of organisations, and numerous books and articles have been written about him. Please see the link.
Riel was executed 16 November 1885.
Among the Métis, and in Québec, Louis Riel was a hero. In English Canada, especially among Orangemen, Riel was the Devil personified.

Louis Riel was born on October 22, 1844 and died on November 16, 1885. Louis Riel would have been 41 years old at the time of death or 170 years old today.
Louis Riel could be described as a "leader." He was certainly "intelligent" and "well-educated." Perhaps the best description has been "clever, but unbalanced."

Manitoba has a Louis Riel Day. There have been a couple to attempts to establish a national Louis Riel Day, but each attempt has been tabled. The last attempt was around 1997. Eventually people will stop squabbling about this and he will be given proper recognition.
The acts, of which Riel was accused, were alleged to have been committed in what was, at the time, part of Northwest Territories. Regina was then the capital of Northwest Territories and the location of the courthouse.
