In today's dollars, the average price of gasoline in the US was $1.90 in 1974, just before the OPEC oil embargo. In March of 1981, during the Iran-Iraq War, it hit $3.40. It dropped as low as $1.40 during 1999, then climbed (with wide swings) to $4.10 in July, 2008. During the financial crisis, it dropped rapidly. Since then, it has climbed to about $2.75.
