The same way it always has - it affects our every choice and decision because our own personal beliefs or our WORLDVIEW are based on whatever we believe.
Thus, any of the religious among us will make life choices based on our religious guidance while an atheist or agnostic will believe in only himself or some set of science or practical philosophy and use that as his personal guide.
Our worldview is extremely important to each and every one of us. Though many may not know to call their personal belief system that, our world view is basically just that - Our beliefs system and how we see and understand the world around us.
Therefore, a person's religion will always affect him greatly. Even if he "rarely uses it" or has a "casual religion", a person still will ultimately always use his worldview (ie; his own "religion") to guide his choices, whether that be his own self or a higher being.

If, and IF there are ANY people left today who still practice that religion, it is because they want to "show off" their ancestors, so to speak.
