The choice of words, specifically "layering" refers to how over time the traditions have changed or adapted their meanings to the needs of the society that it serves. A perfect example is how after the conquest the period of celebration changes to coincide with a christian holiday. The Aztecs were pagan, no christian. However, the christians enjoyed the tradition enough not to do away with it but to give it a christian meaning. Today, especially in border states, it wouldn't be difficult to find thatmexican-Americans confuse the two completely separate holidays: holloween and dia de muertos.
