Since Eisenhower in 1953-1961, Presidents have given their vice-presidents more responsibilities, asking them to represent the administration on special assignments and make appearances on behalf of the President. Before that, the VP did little but chair the Senate and was mostly ignored by the president.

The vice-president has only one official job and that is to chair the Us Senate. However, recent presidents have called on the vice-president to represent the president in various capacities, such as attending funerals of foreign dignitaries or as a special emissary to foreign conferences.
