Veterinary techniques have changed over the years based on society's view of animals and how they fit into our lives. Also, scientific studies have revealed information about animals that we didn't have before. For example, two or three generations back, people typically saw their pets as property instead of a member of the family as many people do now. Also at that time, people didn't believe that animals felt pain like humans do. Pets were anesthetized for spays and neuters but more for the convenience of the veterinarian than for the comfort of the animal. They weren't given any pain medication afterwards because it was believed that the animal would heal faster that way. It was thought that any pain they did feel would help them be cautious in their movements. Presently, pets are a part of the family and their medical care is just as good, if not better, than human medical care. Pain relief for the animal is very important now. They are given pain medication before and after surgical procedures. Studies have shown relieving the animals pain is actually better for their recovery. Animals also receive a lot of preventative and routine care. They get blood tests, dental cleanings, etc. Veterinary Technicians (nurses) are now required to be licensed similar to human nurses. Another trend in veterinary medicine is specializations. Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians can specialize in areas such as surgery, dermatology, and oncology.
