How has your understanding of the commandments changed and deepened as a result of Christian revelation?

The New Testament basically teaches that if we understand the commandments to their fullest extent intended we must realise that we can in no way keep them. For example, Jesus pointed out that the commandment to kill contains within it the idea that we shouldn't be angry since this eventually leads to murder. Thus, the commandments rightly understood point to a heart that is in need of a radical transformation, which only the new life in Christ can provide. It is not just our external acts that need changing but the wicked heart within.
This is also one of the areas most offensive to non-believers who think that they just have 'character faults' which they can themselves remedy whenever they wish. The understanding which Jesus conveyed intends to sweep away this crutch of self-respectability and pride in human religiosity. In this connection He reserved His harshest words for the religious leaders of His day who knew the commandments better than anyone, yet failed to keep them and circumvented them with the 'commandments of men' whenever they chose.
