Castle design changed because William the Conqueror first wanted stone castles and they were built. Then came along Edward I and he wanted concentric castles. it started with a motte and bailey castle

Castles have a changed a lot since medieval times. It used to be Motte and Bailey castles built from wood but then William the conqueror started building castles from stone. They used stone because it was:

  • Strong

  • Couldn't burn

  • Cant be knocked over

  • Good Protection

The attacks were getting bigger when the use of eguipment got better so castles were much easier to attack. This ment that castles had to improve and the way they did this was by building castles made out of stone. These castles had walls of up to 45 meters high and 3.5 meters thick this was the main increase in design.

Since the 12th castles have changed and developed loads, From moat and bailey castles to today. They have developed by having thick stone walls where as in the 12th century they just had wooden walls. Also, after William's son took the throne, the castles were designed with stone walls so that the Keep could be on ground, protected by a firm, strong wall and the soldiers. This was when they stopped building castles with Motte's to keep the important figures safe from any rebels.

They changed the design of the castle when William the Conquer wanted to build castles out of stone.

Castles used to be motte and bailey castles consisting of 2 parts one was on a high hill so no attackers could reach it and the other was like a small village.

Castle designs changed because the motte and bailey was easily burnt or knocked over.

the 12th century castles changed from wooden motte and bailey castles. as you know, wood rots and can burn easily, so they changed some of them in to stone keep castles. these were a lot stronger and did not burn as they were made from stone.

How did castles change over the centuries?

over the years castles have changed from being made of wood , for its light weight , to stone for its sturdiness. castles have changed because of both advances in technology and the fact of the enemy's getting smarter and able to defeat the new castles after their advances. the shapes of the castles have also changed to . for example on the motte and bailey castles the shape of the keep changed from being a square shape to being a round shape . this changed because the corners on the square allowed less viewing , making it a circle allowed the people inside to view from all angles, being able to watch out for the enemy's. although the shape was good on the motte and bailey castles, the material was not very good as wood could be burnt and broken easily. they needed to find a new material that could overcome the enemy's effort's. this is when stone castles came into use. the stone was good as it could not be burnt or broken easily, but they would have to change the shape of the castle as the workers would not be able to haul the large stones up the mound of earth on the motte and bailey castles. castle development went in this order: motte and bailey castles stone keep castles concentric castles quadrangular castles
